The 1881 census records Herbert living with his uncle at 46 Shaw Street, Derby. Also living with his uncle’s family is his elder sister, Emma. There was obviously a major crisis in Herbert’s life for the 1891 census records him living as an inmate in an orphanage.
By 1897 he was living at The Boys Home, The Green in Sunderland from where he joined the army in the Durham Light Infantry. He was transferred to the Derbyshire Regiment on the 8th June 1897. He was described as being 5ft 4 ins. tall with brown hair and hazel eyes.
After this, no further record of his life has been identified.
